Sea of Stars Release Date and More

Sabotage Studio's classic-inspired RPG Sea of Stars is finally releasing this month. A prequel to 2018's The Messenger, the game is set in a universe introduced by that title and features music from composer Yasunori Mitsuda.

The developer of the side-scrolling beat ’em up The Messenger, Sabotage Studio, is back with a different genre for its next project: a turn-based RPG called Sea of Stars. The game will be inspired by 16-bit JRPGs and boast stunning pixel art visuals, plus guest musical compositions from Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda.

Sea of Stars is a prequel to a role-playing game, The Messenger from Sabotage Studio. It blends modern gameplay systems with old-school charm and combines it with an expansive world full of diverse characters to tell an original story.

The game is slated to launch in 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox One Series X and S. Sabotage Studio is working with composer Yasunori Mitsuda, whose music enhanced games such as Chrono Trigger and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Check out the trailer below.

Sea of Stars Gameplay Features

With its engrossing story and twisting gameplay, Sea of Stars promises to be a gripping experience for fans of the genre. The game stars Valere and Zale, aspiring youths training to become Solstice Warriors, the world’s last line of defense against the monstrous creations of The Fleshmancer.

The gameplay is reminiscent of classic JRPGs, featuring a party system that allows players to control up to six characters. Character progression is balanced to flow with the story, so you won’t have to grind through dozens of the same fights.

However, the new system removes level grinding to allow for more tactical battles.

Combat is also turn-based and rewards thoughtful planning and preventing opponents from advancing too far, with each member of the party contributing to their own strategy. The combat system also uses a unique Locks system that lets the player take advantage of enemy-type weaknesses.

It is also worth mentioning the game features dynamic lighting and a world-influencing day/night cycle and has a fully interactive and explorable world that is teeming with life.

Will Sea of Stars Be Multiplayer?

One of the most frequently asked questions about this indie role-playing game, Sea of Stars, is whether it can be played in a multiplayer co-op mode.

However, Sea of Stars doesn’t have a way for multiple players to enjoy the game together. It’s designed to be played single-player. Nevertheless, it’s still possible to have a shared experience of the game.

The game has no complete co-op mode where both players can control the camera, enter and exit zones, or trigger important events. Instead, the main character is the one who controls these aspects, while a second player can join or leave the game at any time and explore the world with their own hero. Additionally, co-op puzzles are available, and a dungeon called “Halls of Cooperation” can be played together.
