Horror is a genre that never lost its popularity. Every year, new titles come out with jumpscares, engaging narratives, and horrifying monsters. As Lawod, we reviewed many horror titles.
In our latest review, Poppy Playtime: Chapter 2, we mentioned difficulty, premise, power of the unknown, and many building blocks of a horror game. Today, we present you with the 5 best horror games every gamer must play. These games almost perfected all the necessary elements. Let’s start with number 5
5-) Silent Hill Frenchies
A name that could be a synonym to horror if there was a gaming dictionary. Silent Hill is one of the founding fathers of modern horror games. Almost every second you play, you will feel shivers down your spine. A story that continues through three consoles(PS1, 2, and 3) should explain its success over the years. You can find Silent Hill 4: The Room on GOG.
4-)Outlast
Almost 10 years ago, a game that shook the world. Every gaming Youtuber you know was playing this insane title. Three years after its PC release, it sold over 6 million copies. Outlast is a masterpiece that uses the concept of a horrifyingly scary mental asylum at its peak. While running from enemies, every confidential file you find sinks you into a deeper rabbit hole. The title was a big success, which led to a DLC, Whistleblower, and a second release, Outlast 2. The developers announced the third title. And you can add The Outlast Trials to your wishlist on Steam.
3-)Soma
A masterpiece of psychological horror, Soma is a title created by Frictional Games. The game is all about narrative. The monsters, creepy silence, and the world you play in, might scare you at first. But as you move forward, the reality and the situation you are in will haunt your every second. It’s a game you shouldn’t miss. If you want to know more about Soma, you can check out our Soma Review.
2-)Resident Evil Franchise
Considering the last two releases, I don’t think we need to explain why Resident Evil is on our list. From the start, the franchise blew up. RE put a standard to horror games and stayed on top for many years. The franchise lost its popularity after 2012. But with its 2017 release, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, it stood back on. The graphics and story-telling of the game were remarkable in many ways. After remastering many old titles, Resident Evil The Village expanded the story with new features in the game.
1-) Amnesia: Dark Descent
Even though this is a list, we don’t necessarily say one is better than the other. Every gamer has a taste for games. We respect that. But Amnesia: Dark Descent is a different game in many ways. A game where you discover the world with your character, counting every drop of oil for your lantern and try keeping yourself sane for as long as possible. A well-written narrative with every page of your diary pushes you closer to the big picture. Besides the main gameplay, being able to create your maps and story lead to a massive community. After 12 years of its release, the visuals still hold up, giving that mysterious, uncanny atmosphere to the game. The game also has two sequels, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and Amnesia: Rebirth.
