When a game with a title like The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is released on April Fools’ Day, it’s easy to assume it will be the usual fare: a silly email from some PR rep or a fake trailer for a fake game. But in this case, it’s actually a real free game from SEGA, published on Steam and featuring their mascot.
Katie Chrzanowski, who serves as the social media manager and executive producer for the project, tells Kotaku that she sold a small team on the idea of working on an April Fools-themed Sonic game two years before it came to fruition. The project took longer than expected, but she and her team did an impressive job of turning it into a full-fledged game.
Basically, you will step aboard the Mirage Express and interrogate characters in themed cars like a saloon, library, casino, and conductor car to discover who murdered Sonic.
The gameplay is standard visual novel fare, with the player as Barry interviewing characters and searching environments for evidence. The game’s over-exaggerated expressions and zaniness lend themselves well to the comedy. At the same time, the hand-drawn art and music are both top-notch.
The cast feels like it should, not caricatures of themselves as in some recent games. There are also genuinely funny moments, such as Amy berating Sonic for getting a chili dog before the party started and Tails having an internal meltdown over his role in all this. Despite some issues with the DreamGear mini-game, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog has managed to make a solid impression on its audience.
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog Available Platforms
SEGA surprised fans this month by dropping a murder mystery visual novel on Steam, starring the colorful cast of Sonic characters. The game is available only for PCs, including MacOS operated.
There is no information on whether the game will be released on other gaming platforms or stores, but for now, we don’t expect The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog to release on any other platforms.
