This month’s Xbox Game Pass lineup is incredibly impressive, with four day-one releases, unique indie experiences, and potentially iconic titles joining the catalog in September 2023.

Gris – September 5

Xbox Game Pass September 2023 lineup starts on September 5 with Gris, which takes the classic Limbo formula and applies it to space. It’s one of the more acclaimed indie titles to hit the platform, and it could be a huge draw.

The Nomada Studio title won multiple awards upon release and is regarded as one of the year’s best indie games. Its evocative and atmospheric world is brought to life in a manner that resembles a watercolor painting.

Gris is a young girl who is going through a tough time in her life. She’s lost in her own world, and her dress gives her new abilities to help her navigate her reality. As the story progresses, Gris will grow emotionally and start seeing her world in a different way, which will open up new paths for her to explore using her abilities.

Gris offers a peaceful and thought-provoking experience that doesn’t involve any danger, frustration, or death. Players will explore a beautifully designed world that’s brought to life with stunning art, detailed animation, and a beautiful original score. As the game progresses, players will encounter puzzles, platforming sequences, and optional challenges that will become available as more of Gris‘s world becomes accessible.

Starfield – September 6

Bethesda Game Studios‘ highly anticipated space-themed role-playing title Starfield is finally ready to take flight. This is the studio’s first new single-player game since Fallout 4, and it promises to whisk players off into a massive Milky Way galaxy filled with over 1,000 handcrafted planets and procedurally generated ones.

The game was originally slated to launch in November 2022, but a delay into the first half of this year allowed the developers to polish it up.

As of today, Microsoft is offering early access to the game for all Xbox Game Pass subscribers who opt to pre-order the Premium edition. The package will also include a special Starfield Constellation Edition collectible and provides five days of early access to the game ahead of its release on September 6. Starfield will be available for PC and Xbox Series X|S, with a day-one release on both platforms.

Lies of P – September 19

Neowiz and developer Round 8 Studio are putting their own spin on the story of Pinocchio with Lies of P. The game takes a dark turn on the classic tale as you play as P, a puppet who is on a quest to find Geppetto and become human. Featuring a Souls-like gameplay style, it is up to you to trek across Krat, a city infested with deadly puppets and madness, to find your way back to Geppetto.

Lies of P received a cinematic trailer at Gamescom that showcased the stylish combat, detailed locales, and harrowing enemies you will encounter on your journey. You can check it out below.

Lies of P will be released on September 19 and will become available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.

Party Animals – September 20

Party Animals is a frantic multiplayer game that looks like a lot of fun and another day-one release.

Players can beat up their friends as cuddly animals in online action. It has a lot in common with Gang Beasts, which was also an Xbox Game Pass debut in 2020. You can learn more about the game by reading our Party Animals release date article and the Party Animal download article.

Party Animals will become available for Xbox Game Pass subscribers as soon as it releases on September 20.

Payday 3 – September 21

The long-awaited Payday 3 is finally launching in September. The third game in the popular shooter franchise promises a new story campaign and plenty of heists to take on, all with frantic gunplay and stealth elements.

You can step back into a life of crime as a member of the notorious Payday Gang. They were the envy of their peers and a nightmare for law enforcement everywhere they went. Even though it’s been several years since their reign of terror in Washington D.C. ended, they come out of retirement to deal with a new threat that has brought them back into action.

A day-one release for the Xbox Game Pass September 2023 lineup, Payday 3, should be a huge draw for fans of the series.

Cocoon – September 29

The final game of the Xbox Game Pass September 2023 lineup is an indie puzzle adventure game, Cocoon.

From Jeppe Carlsen, the lead gameplay designer of Limbo and Inside, Cocoon takes you on an adventure across worlds within worlds. Master world-leaping mechanics to unravel a cosmic mystery.

The story of Cocoon is all about exploring different worlds and solving a big mystery that lies at the heart of it all. It’s a puzzle game that wants to keep things mysterious, so there’s not a lot we know about the story just yet. One really cool thing is that you get to travel through different worlds and fight Guardians to uncover the secrets behind it all. It should be a pretty interesting and complex story!
